As of January 7 , the WWE has been partnered up with Netflix and has brought live broadcasts of the show onto Netflix. This is a big step for Netflix since they’ve only had one live broadcast before WWE, which was the Jake Paul/ Mike Tyson fight. The WWE will be a part of Netflix for the next 10 years which allows plenty of time for growth and change for both of the platforms.
This partnership will start a new era for streaming services and open doors for multiple opportunities in and outside of themselves. Both companies make a ridiculous amount of money each year, with WWE making around $1 billion, and Netflix making an estimated $34 billion. As big as both companies are, they could now take advantage of the weight their names hold to make the collaboration something even bigger.
My reason for this opinion is since WWE got removed from the USA Network across television, it now allows the shows to run longer with more entertainment and more explicit content than before. For example, during the time WWE was broadcasted on the USA Network there were multiple restrictions to the certain language being used, the amount of blood, match types, and time limitations. I believe WWE’s departure from the USA Network will positively affect the company by giving them the opportunity for easier schedules, allowing more content to be shown, attracting newer and older fans, and gaining a longer runtime of shows.
However, there’s certain people who aren’t sure if Netflix is the right platform for WWE. For example, IGN claims the deal is good for business but not for fans, particularly fans who live outside of the United States or in foreign countries. The reason for IGN’s statement is that Japan, Philippines, South Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa don’t have access to the WWE broadcast on Netflix. Even though this may be a present problem, Netflix could make changes for broadcasting in foreign countries down the road.
Based off the new adjustments and execution of WWE’s new era of streaming, I believe this will be the first time in years the companies will be more popular than ever by making a huge impact and change on the media and streaming services.
